Love at first sight is easy to understand; it's when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle

August Festivals

July 26, 2006

There are two festivals in Singapore in August that one cannot escape from:

1) National Day- August 8. The whole of Singapore is awash in a field of red (since the National flag is red and white). A standard of the celebration is the National Day Parade (NDP)which is a big event. Tickets are normally raffled off ahead of time to the public and if you are lucky enough to get a ticket, you might as well strike the lotto draw .The give aways in the goody bag that each NDP ticket holder is given is enough for the tickets to be very precious. and sought after(e.g. discount vouchers, calculators, flashlights, bags etc) Some are even selling off or having it auctioned off in the Ebay and yahoo.

My wife and children had been lucky enough to have watched the National Day Parade for 3 times in a row in 2000,2001 and 2002 just because my wife's company is a sponsor of the parade.

This year is specially memorable since it will be the last time that it will be held in the National Stadium(which is set to be torn down to give way to a bigger more modern stadium).

2)Hungry Ghost festival Month- August is the start of the Hungry Ghost Month when the chinese believe that ghosts of dead relatives are said to roam the earth.

During this month, chinese believe it is bad luck to do so many life changing decisions like moving house, getting married, having a baby or changing jobs.

But despite the gloom in this festival, there is also the getai or stage performances of chinese singers and dancers. The singing at these performances are awfully loud and off key so only those who are tone deaf or extremely bored with their lives would be watching the getai. The audience is usually composed of the old & retired who are fond of hokkien singing, maids who accompany the old and retired, and young children .

Take note that the front row of the audience seats are usually empty. Dont ever attempt to sit down in these chairs since they are reserved for the souls of the dead.

Christmas in Manila

July 24, 2006

Im already dreaming of Christmas in Manila  complete with puto bumbong and suman at manga.

For my compatriots in Singapore, going home this Xmas season means months of planning, what to give to your inaanaks and kamaganaks and parientes.

I have searched for the current air fares from four available airlines for those going home in December and coming back in January(in time for work and school).

(From cheapest to most expensive):The rates are for a party of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids):

  (JETSTAR)  $1412 or $353/passenger

(Singapore Airlines)$1454 or $401 for adults $326 for children

(Cebu Pacific) $1716 or $429 per passenger

(PAL) $2330 or $651 for adults & $514 for kids

The rates are still high, maybe a few months from now, I will check again(October will probably be the best time)

Incidentally, all the budget fares for Jetstar are already sold out for December and January. The only date you can get is Dec 12 and return by Jan 12.

MY TWO SONS

Nygel, our first born is named Nygel Kyle which means "Singing Black Bird". When Nygel was still small he rarely smiles but oh was he so chubby and so white. He was often mistaken as a Japanese or Korean baby because of his smooth rosy and white complexion.Nygel was born on July 18,1996 after a trial labor which lasted almost 8 hrs until his doctor gave up and we opted for a cesarean birth.

Niles Kristian whose name was taken from the butler in the TV Sitcom "Nanny" is our second child.Niles was born on September 27,1997. My wife wanted him to come out on the 27th so he was born by cesarean section on the 27th of September while a typhoon was raging in Manila. While Nygel is the serious one, Niles is our happy one. He started walking at 10 months and is a very mischievous kid. He likes to play karate with his kuya Nygel.

My Family

There are some things that can only be understood between the two of us. There are words that only we can say, smiles that only we can inspire, and dreams that can only be shared between two people who care… the way we do.

What we share is so essential to everything that makes our world work out the way we want it to. We share something that is stronger than any storm, that is beautiful and caring and warm, that is supportive and trusting and sweet.

Our marriage and our precious love is something our hearts and our happiness will always treasure and keep.

Hello world!

July 21, 2006

I  am off to Chiang Mai again on Sunday. My efficient travel agent has given me a discount for my trip.

Chiang Mai evokes the image of floating lanterns ,wonderful aroma of food and cool mountain breeze.

This is my very first blog. As the photo in my blog shows, a bangka or a small boat. I am not a boatman but I am a traveller and one of my wishes when I retire is to travel throughout the Philippines.

I dont know whether I can fulfill this retirement wish since I am still a long way from retirement.

I hope to keep myself busy from time to time by updating this blog .
